Bodrum is one of Turkey's most popular resorts attracting visitors from all over the world. The town of Bodrum is located on a peninsular and has grown up around the two bays and the 15th century castle. Its economy relied on fishing and other port activities until the 1970's when Bodrum started to attract tourists, the town is a wonderful balance of old and new buildings, whitewashed houses dotted on the hillside covered in colourful bougainvillea, hidden cobbled alleyways, a bustling bazaar, spectacular waterfront and the magnificent ancient monuments such as the Castle of St. Peter which dominates the Bodrum skyline all of which makes Bodrum a must when visiting Turkey.

The harbour / marina area of Bodrum is home to many elegant yachts as well as the local Turkish Gulets and fishing boats. There is also a good selection of quality shops, bars and restaurants along the waterfront. Bodrum has a quiet laid back atmosphere by day and is a thriving beach resort; there are many sandy coves and a small beach for those wanting to soak up the Turkish sun. For watersports enthusiasts, windsurfing, parasailing, dinghy sailing are all available locally.

As the sun sets and night time falls the heart of Bodrum really comes to life, there is a vast selection of restaurants and bars to choose from, many with views over the water or of the flood lit ramparts of the castle. For those wanting to party late into the night many bars and night clubs stay open to the early hours, one popular venue with holiday visitors to Bodrum is the Halikarnas Night Club, one of the most popular in Turkey, with a capacity for over 5000, it's columns and spectacular laser light show can be seen from all over Bodrum town. Owners overview

Sleeps 8

The Villa

This is an extremely spacious villa of 200 square metres covering three storeys and comprising 4 bedrooms (2 double and 2 twin). The downstairs double bedroom also features a sofa making it a suitable "family room" sleeping 4 people. (This brings the total number of people the villa can accommodate up to 10.)

The three first floor bedrooms have air conditioning whereas the downstairs bedroom and ground floor are cooled by ceiling fans. There are two bathrooms, each with a shower. From the first floor, stairs lead up to a large rooftop sun terrace which offers magnificent views of the local countryside and sea.

The ground floor is a substantial open-plan kitchen, dining and living area. The kitchen is well equipped with a large fridge freezer, full-sized oven and hob, toaster, kettle and full set of pans, crockery and cutlery. The dining area seats 8 people and can be easily served from the kitchen. The lounge is roomy with comfy chairs by the fireplace, and a large sofa facing the TV and DVD player. The DVD player will also play CDs and MP3s so bring your own music and play it through the TV's speakers. A hammock hangs by the terrace door which you can take outside and attach to a tree and the terrace railings to relax in the garden.

Outside, the covered terrace is furnished with a dining table and chairs to seat up to 8 people - perfect for outside dining. The villa is part of a site of only 6 houses which share the pool and gardens, ours occupying a prime position overlooking the pool. The garden is generously spacious with plenty of lawn space and many beautiful flowers and trees. The whole grounds are maintained to a very high standard by the site manager who lives on the site and will be happy to help with any matters.

Location

The villa is located just a five minute walk from the beach in the beautiful bay of Kucukbuk (meaning literally "little bay" and pronounced "koo-chook-book" except the "oo" sound should be short like a "u"). Despite new villas having been recently built in the area, sites are still separated sparsely enough to show plenty of natural greenery. The beach is sandy and has several restaurants which, in the evening allow you to dine on the beach or on the wooden jetties which protrude into the sea.

Kucukbuk is on the outskirts of the larger bay and village of Gundogan (pronounced "Goon-dhwan"). Gundogan is a 20 walk or 5 min drive and offers a greater selection of restaurants and shops, within a larger bay. Despite this, the village is largely unspoilt and has a rural feel with locals herding their cows through the streets and selling their home grown produce. Seafood is a speciality on the waterside restaurants and you will often see local fishermen selling their catches of the day directly to the restaurants. Gundogan also caters for many watersports such as sailing and windsurfing, and boat trips operate from here visiting local islands and bays further along the coast. (You can arrange to have them pick you up at Kucukbuk if you ask.)

Yalikavak is a 15 minute drive away and offers a good shopping street, a marina, beach, bars and restaurants. On the road between Gundogan and Yalikavak are two major supermarkets, Gima and Migros, where you can stock up on provisions.

At Ortakent (half-way between Yalikavak and Bodrum) is a large water park. It is opposite the KIPA hypermarket which is part of the Tesco chain and sells many well known Tesco products as well as local and international brands. Gumbet and Bodrum are only 30 minutes away for those want the busy night life and bustling resorts.

Also look out for the markets, typically the Turgutreis one on Saturdays. Yalikavak is usually on Thursdays and Gundogan on Wednesdays. There are no fixed prices so don't forget to haggle.

Hiring a car is the easiest way to get around, but you can manage without one. If you're staying for a few weeks you may like to save some money and shed the car for some of the time and use the local dolmus, or mini-bus service, which operates cheaply and efficiently throughout the peninsula. Yellow taxis are good for short journeys but can add up a bit on longer ones. Many people hitch around the area and it is not uncommon for lifts to be offered by drivers who are going the same way as you.
